Rupi Kaur’s ‘Home Body’ spoke to me like no psychologist ever could.
I am forever grateful for Rupi. She changed my life.
If you enjoy poetry, you may be familiar with Rupi Kaur. She is one of the most well-known "Instapoets," with more than 4 million followers on Instagram.
Getting a physical copy of this book took me two solid years of searching and waiting. It's in my book-shelf right now and it looks lovely. Very very lovely.
I am forever grateful for Rupi. She changed my life. Her words brought me back to life. She made me feel better with her words. Still does actually. I have devoured this book countless times alongside her other books but home body will always hold a particular place in my heart.
Home body is a compilation of raw, honest exchanges with oneself that serves as a reminder to saturate oneself in acceptance, love, and the ability to accept change. The book was illustrated by Rupi herself and it is a reflection on life's various facets, including womanhood, love, family, community, heartbreak, loss, trauma, healing, femininity, migration, and changes.
Her words in this book had a profound impact on me, and I felt a strong connection to what she had written because I recognised elements of my own path and life in those words.
I don't understand how Rupi was able to so perfectly and poetically explain certain ideas and sentiments, but everything just felt so honest and real. Reading it was such an experience for me.
Prior to when I read it, I had never read poetry like that before. I completed the book in hours and was suddenly hungry for more, so I quickly read her other books and absorbed all she had to say. Reposting her poems endlessly and memorizing some of them verbatim. This book? An experience!
Light and dark rests in this book.
The book is divided into four sections namely mind, heart, rest, and awake and it is very easy to read. In her quest for self-awareness and happiness, Rupi opens her heart to a deeper level by revealing her melancholy and the darkness around her.
Home Body is much more than just a book of experiences. It empowers and encourages me everytime I pick it up and it remains one of my best buddies on many nights.
I want you to read it and experience the same emotions I had. I hope it revitalises and illuminates the experiences you have but are unable to express.
I hope it helps you.
‘‘what’s the greatest lesson a woman should learn?
that since day one, she’s already had everything
she needs within herself. it’s the world that
convinced her she did not.’’
I love Rupi.🥺😭
I first read milk and honey and got to understand a different side of poetry. It was a baptism. I'd jump on this soon with the way you just described it. You write so soothingly.
